Sit back for a minute, close your eyes and daydream about the last time you were in a greenhouse.  Was it warm? Did it smell like wet dirt and plants?  If you have ever been in a wooden frame greenhouse in early spring, you know nothing else feels or smells the same.

My greenhouse is an amazing way to extend the growing season and get my gardening fix.  It also just makes sense for us to have a greenhouse, for economic and health reasons.  Greenhouses save money and make eating fresh fruits and vegetables easy to incorporate into our kid’s meals and snacks.

A Red Cedar Greenhouse

A wooden frame greenhouse was the traditional style of greenhouse blueprint long before the metal and plastic greenhouses became popular.  Honestly, I prefer them.  Here is why:

Benefits of a Wooden Frame Greenhouse:

  • Wood is the easiest material to work with when building a greenhouse
  • When you build a greenhouse from wood it gives the greenhouse a strong frame ready for any covering you choose
  • If you construct a greenhouse from Canadian Western Red Cedar it will last a long time
  • Make a greenhouse from wood and it will allow you to affix hooks to the frame to hang tools and brackets for shelves
  • Wooden frame greenhouse plans are the 1st choice of the traditional gardener
  • Wood creates a healthier and more natural environment inside your greenhouse
  • Wood greenhouse designs are more attractive and will blend in more naturally with your backyard garden
  • Wood greenhouses are better at maintaining a constant temperature than metal ones
  • Wood frame greenhouse construction makes it easier to fix extra insulation in winter

With all this being said have you ever considered building your own small wooden frame greenhouse?  It isn’t as crazy as you might think.  Right now would be the perfect time to build one.  Can you imagine puttering around in it this winter, while you look through the gardening magazines and then starting plants inside this spring?

Take the time to think about again – nothing smells the same as freshly watered tomato plants inside a humid greenhouse especially when there is still snow and frost outside.
